A MIRACLE TO BUKAVU Meet Dr. Denis Mukwege, founder of the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Congo.
Renowned Congolese doctor, Denis Mukwege, has been something of a savior for the victims of sexual
violence in his native country. His hospital has become a refuge and beacon of hope for thousands
of women. Because Dr. Mukwege recognizes that his patients often suffer in silence, he has become a voice for
them. He travels around the world –often at his own expense– to tell their stories and raise awareness
about the use of rape as a weapon of war. He has been honored by the United Nations with the 2008 prize for human rights for his tireless work at
Panzi hospital. Dr. Mukwege was also named “African of the Year” by a Nigerian newspaper and has been
nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice. |
