Panzi Hospital is a primary source of medical care for victims of the intense violence and conflict that has
plagued the DRC for decades. Since its founding in 1999, the Hospital has cared for more than 21,000 victims
of sexual and gender-based violence, by providing over 4,000 fistula repairs (an internal injury causing
incontinence) on women and girls of all ages, urgent health care for 11,000 survivors of sexual torture,
and economic empowerment and micro-finance programming for more than 3,000 women. In 2010, over 3,500 women
sought refuge and life-saving medical treatment at Panzi Hospital.
