arge protests on September 19 and 20 in Kinshasa and other key cities deteriorated quickly, with Congolese police and military firing on protesters. Dozens of civilians were killed, and hundreds more were subjected to extrajudicial arrests, harassment, and punishment. Civil society leaders continue to be harassed and pursued by the Congolese intelligence service, ANR.
The major opposition coalition, the "Rassemblement," has called for a national strike ("ville morte," or "dead city") for this Wednesday, October 1. The "Pathway to Peace" looks more and more distant, as negotiating positions between the Government and key opposition groups remain far apart, and the Constitutional end of President Kabila's second term in office looms ahead in only 63 days (as of October 17).
