December 19 marked the final day of President Joseph Kabila's Constitutionally-mandated term in office. Protests were violently repressed, and hundreds of peaceful activists arrested. Under the auspices of Congo's Conference of Catholic Bishops (CENCO), Kabila's allies and the main political opposition signed an agreement aimed at ending the political crisis in the last hours of 2016. Read Panzi Foundation board member Anthony Gambino's compelling op-ed in Newsweek about these critical, eleventh-hour negotiations.
