Panzi Foundation USA (PFUSA) is the US-based charity which supports the work and mission of Dr. Denis Mukwege, co-winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. In 1999, Dr. Mukwege founded the Panzi Hospital in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a region that has been devastated by war and an epidemic of sexualized violence. Panzi Foundation USA makes financial investments at Panzi Hospital and its holistic healing programs, and engages in strategic advocacy to end sexual violence in conflict in the DRC and around the world.
The Director of Major Gifts and Special Events is responsible for the overall management of the major gifts program, charged with managing relationships and securing support from donors who are capable of making gifts of $20,000 to $1M+. In addition, this individual will play a crucial role in the development of strategies surrounding an upcoming multi-million dollar capital campaign to support renovations to Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This individual will manage a personal portfolio of current and prospective donors and develop and implement a plan for major gift fundraising across the country. This includes, but is not limited to: identification of relevant tools and software, development of a solicitation and stewardship strategy, event planning, and more. This individual will also work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Development and Communications on individual giving campaigns (including mid-year and end-of-year appeals), annual reports, stewardship of strategic partnerships, and other fundraising priorities as assigned.
The candidate will be a professional with extensive individual fundraising experience, with a proven track record of managing large portfolios and successfully increasing revenue. The ideal candidate is a flexible team player, willing to “wear many hats” as part of a small team, with a passion for women’s rights, global health, and ending sexual violence in conflict.
While the ideal candidate will be based in the greater Washington, DC metro area, this will be mostly a remote work position, with expectations to collaborate in person at a mutually-convenient location in the area approximately once every other week, to once a week, depending on time of year and priorities. Exceptional candidates in other geographic locations will also be considered.
Responsible for annual fundraising goal of approximately $2 million.
Develops and drives strategy for future multi-million dollar capital campaign, in conjunction with several funding partners and donor organizations
Identify prospective donors and drive research, including development of donor profiles
Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommending specific purpose and level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation; assuring that solicitations are carried out.
Responsible for the process of timely gift documentation and recognition
Lead planning of fundraising events
Participate in annual strategic planning and goal-setting.
Keep current on programs and activities related to the operations of Panzi Hospital and Panzi Foundation DRC.
Manage their time independently and efficiently in a remote environment.
Knowledge and Experience:
At least five or more years of increasingly progressive individual major gift fundraising experience, preferably with an international non-governmental organization, and two or more years of management experience.
Experience with capital campaigns and/or infrastructure fundraising highly desirable.
Experience in planned giving preferred.
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree in nonprofit management or public administration or related field preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to articulate the vision, mission, and goals of the organization to effectively build a case for support.
Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic fundraising plans.
Ability to understand the needs and interests of major donors in order to further advance relationships.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets, and estates.
In addition to these general skills, the position requires the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle, including initiation of contact; cultivation; solicitation; and stewardship.
Must be willing and able to travel domestically on a semi-frequent basis (approximately 6 or more times a year).
